Signals of Spring
Description:
Utilizing their own observations in the field; real-time scientific data from various sources including communication and remote sensing satellites, NASA and expert scientists, and the Internet, students investigate the migratory behavior of specific animals. They analyze how Earth systems affect animals, and decide what factors (such as topography, seasons, etc.) directly influence migratory patterns, with respect to different time scales. To understand seasonal change, they create their own representations of data, plotting length of days and average daily temperatures, and compare their data to that of participating schools at other latitudes. A 15-hour teacher training is offered New York, NY; Washington DC; and Houston, TX. Curricular materials are available online for participating classrooms.
