Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Gr. K-4 Classroom Activities
Description:
Students consider the basic properties of moving water, and
of both liquid and solid substances within it, in their own experience,
and relate this to water quality in marine sanctuaries. They do simple
classroom activities that demonstrate these properties, and they discuss
the difficulties of cleaning up polluted water. Using online resources,
they consider how water flowing through the Everglades might affect the
Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, then how human recreational activities
might affect it. They make "billboards" to teach families what can be done
to make sure that the water near their home stays clean and is not wasted.
Online resources for the billboard contents are suggested. Next, students
use other online resources to research loggerhead sea turtles and manatees
and and the habitats in which they live.
