Earth, Moon, and Stars (GEMS)

Description:
Part of the Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS) series by the Lawrence Hall of Science, six 45-minute activities in a 100-page book provide resources on ancient models of the universe, gravity, the phases of the moon, Earth's daily motion, telling time by the stars, and other subjects. Students learn to answer such questions as these: If the Earth is round, why does it look flat? Why does the Moon change its shape? They observe and record changes in the sky and create models to explain their observations. They develop skills in creating and using models, visualizing, mathematical and geometrical activities, using a map, and other areas. A 19-minute orientation video is available online. Also available are correlations of GEMS to the California Science Content Standards and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.
