Research and Methodology, Sustainable Seas - Activities for K-4
Description:
Using online resources, students invent a submersible with
mechanisms to control temperature, air pressure, and oxygen supply, modelled
after the DeepWorker submersible of The Sustainable Seas Expeditions, a
five-year project of underwater exploration and discovery of the marine
world. They take a virtual dive into the kelp forest of California's Monterey
Bay to see some of the things theyâd study if they were to go on
a DeepWorker dive. Next, students devise strategies for taking underwater
inventories of marine mammals or invertebrates, considering methods and
equipment. They conduct online investigations of sea turtle movements;
the Great American Fish Count count; and sonar.
