Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Gr. 5-8 Classroom Activities

Description:
Using online resources, students investigate the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and its 11 major watersheds, considering the impacts of human activities on water quality in the ocean. They learn about storm drain pollution prevention and write summaries of what they've learned. They investigate possible storm drain pollution problems in their area, and write letters to the editor of a local newspaper. Next, students make an "interdependence web" of relationships among species in Monterey Bay. They calculate the average number of species that each mammal depends on, and write about specific aspects of the web.
