The Great American Desert?
Description:
In this activity, students assume the role of an agronomist and receive information about climate change and its possible effects on grasslands in western Nebraska and eastern Colorado. Students will examine data related to temperature change, examine satellite imagery of Garden County Nebraska, and examine different varieties of grasses. Students will then develop a hypothesis and an experiment to test it. Students will present their hypothesis to the class.
Although these activities are designed to teach specific skills and knowledge through scientific inquiry, their broader intent is to stimulate thought and discussion about the long-term impacts of a warmer planet. Each activity is part of an overall series entitled The Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change, which includes teacher resources for grades 1-12. Twelve modules (10 printed and 2 online resources) comprise the set
