Blanket of Ash
Description:
Students learn to interpret false color satellite images, then compare and contrast images of Mount St. Helens,
Washington from 1973, 1983, 1988, 1992, and 1996. They determine a
"safe zone of evacuation" for the Mount St. Helens eruption of May
18, 1980, by using NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) DataSlate
software to measure the distance from the summit of the volcano to
the edge of the ash-covered land. Next, they analyze the rate of
recovery of the land devastated by the eruption, by using DataSlate
to measure the area destroyed by ash in the 1983 image and comparing
it to the 1988, 1992, and 1996 images.
