Analyze a Snowfall Map

Description:
Students mark a map of recorded snowfall amounts, using different colors for areas of more than 12 inches, 6-11 inches, and less than 6 inches of snowfall. They look for a pattern on their maps. They look at the track of a low-pressure system, and explain how it relates to the pattern of snowfall on their maps. Next, they look at where areas of heavy snowfall are near areas of light or no snowfall, and determine the variation in snowfall over distance (the "snowfall gradient," snowfall variation divided by map distance).
